Pysanka eggs are one of Ukraine’s most widespread traditional crafts, with origins dating back over a thousand years. The tradition of decorating eggs can be traced to ancient times—cult eggs have been found in Scythian burials in eastern Crimea (4th century BCE). The earliest known pysanka from Kyivan Rus’ dates back to the 11th–13th centuries and was made of clay. Traditionally, Pysanka eggs were more than just decorations—each pattern held protective and sacred meanings. They were placed in homes to ward off evil, given to future partners as a sign of love and even buried in fields to ensure a good harvest. Despite centuries of history, this art remains a living tradition, preserving Ukraine’s spirit through the hands of its artisans.
This set brings together three pysanka eggs, each representing a distinct region of Ukraine—Kyiv, Lviv, and Donetsk. Their authentic historical ornaments reflect the unique cultural heritage of each area. Owning this set means holding a symbolic map of Ukraine’s rich traditions in your hands—from west to east, united through the language of ornamentation.
